Papillon is owned and skippered by Dr Andrew Renaut, cancer surgeon and author. He took possession to escape the many insanities of modern-day living, in particular politicians.
Andrew was born and raised in England and has spent his whole life on and around boats. He was taught how to sail and navigate by his father who was himself a passionate sailor and a navigator on bombers during WW2. He initially learned to sail in dinghies but then ventured to ocean racing and is a veteran of numerous cross-channel (English Channel) and Fastnet races – one of the most challenging events in the blue-water racing calendar. He lived in London for 25 years, and spent many summers, when a medical student and junior surgeon, chartering boats with friends in the Mediterranean and cruising the islands of Greece and the Turkish coast.
He moved to Australia in 1998, to complete his specialist surgical training, initially in the place that he believes has some of the best sailing in the world: Sydney Harbour. He then lived in New Zealand for 5 years establishing his first surgical practice. He moved back to Australia in 2005, this time to Brisbane where he now lives with his two daughters, and where he still runs a busy surgical practice, looking after patients with cancer and other bowel-related conditions.
As well as his specialist medical degrees, Andrew has collected numerous other qualifications along the way including the all-important Yacht Master Offshore certificate with commercial endorsement. He also has his Private Pilot’s Licence and he is an Advanced Open Water Diver (PADI).
In addition to his surgical practice he runs a web design company that specialises in websites for medical specialists.
Andrew has many other passions including skiing and cooking. His favourite cuisine is Italian and he has spent many weeks at residential classes in Tuscany. Andrew is Papillon’s executive chef.
He is also passionate about health and wellbeing and has established an online forum – Nysteia, and has written the definitive guide about the only thing that works for obesity – The User’s Manual For Your Body. He maintains peak physical and mental fitness by following the Nysteia Formula every day. Life onboard Papillon is all about embracing this philosophy.
Andrew will be assisted by one, and sometimes two, trained crew. However, everyone on board is encouraged to participate in sailing and running Papillon.
